Qurbani done locally in the UK
For the last few years we had offered Qurbani to Indonesia, where we have links with charities there. During Eid, almost every mosque will perform the qurbani right then and there. The distribution to eligible recipients will be done within a few minutes of slaughter, and from my experience growing up there, the meat will be cooked within hours. Quite neat and efficient. However, recently we had an enquiry about doing qurbani right here in the UK. After further research, I found the following official guidance from Defra: The law now permits Qurbani/Udhia to be made:
- by a licensed Muslim slaughterman
- by the Islamic method, and
- in a licensed slaughterhouse which is under official veterinary supervision.
Qurbani / Udhia is not permitted in fields or in farm buildings or in domestic or other premises . So I can see several issues:
- The slaughter must be done on specific premises:
- Presumably this needs to tie in with the production schedule of the slaughterhouse.
- The need to tie a specific sheep or cattle to named persons will need to be communicated to the slaughterperson.
- Distribution of the meat from that specific sheep or cattle needs to be done separately, as there are strict eligibility rules.
If anybody has insight on how the above issues may be resolved, please don't hesitate to contact us.
